Buy in season
If you can, try to buy local food in season. You will enjoy the taste and texture of food which hasn't been treated to travel thousands of miles to get to you. You will also find that buying in season will also save you money. Buying locally grown, in-season produce is good for the environment and supports local farmers. Also, knowing where your food comes from gives you piece of mind.

Buy organic
One major advantage of organic food is avoiding pesticides. On the flip side, it is often more expensive. Finding a local producer, and understanding how they treat their crops, when they spray, and what their perspective is on using chemicals will give you an understanding of how your food is produced. Another option is to join a CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) farm near you.

What is organic?

Organic Farming is a system of agriculture which avoids the use of agro-chemicals. Walter Northbourne coined the term in his book Look to the Land in 1940. In the United States, organic certification is governed by the United States Department of Agriculture. Often times, farms that are not certified organic use acceptable methods of production, and getting to know your local farmers will be worth your time if you are serious about eating locally.
